One Ton Goldfish - significants of the artist and their PURPOSE 

The dawn of a new age is peeking over the horizon, technology is shrinking the world, cutting out the middleman, allowing a floodgate of opportunists to enter, and leaving behind the deeper values of connectivity. We lose touch with each other to streamline evolution, and the art form must hold its ground when faced with adversity as we step into each generation. It is the art form that the world measures itself against; this is the reason the world progresses. 

It is with the same measure that we value the true nature of mankind, stripping away everything but the vulnerability of transparency. When you have no boundaries, the true test of holding yourself accountable is ever clear. Therefore, it becomes the job of both the creator and society to protect an artist’s incentive to strive for greatness. 

When stripped to its real purpose, the “need” that lies within all art forms has no strings, no smoke and mirrors. It is not found in the value of the art itself, but within the artist. To measure the true value of art is to look at its creator. The priceless value beyond the tangible strings attached is the intangible idea behind the work. The true power in art does not have boundaries of containment. The art itself will flow in and out, and eventually fade with time . . . but the meaning can last forever. 

When you give humanity more than the tangibility of art, they begin to expect it. And, just like supply and demand, when the market demands something, it creates an incentive to supply it—in this case, that means bringing meaning and purpose to art beyond tangibility. The art form is the cornerstone of communication, and when you put that incentive above all else, humanity is pulled in a positive direction. We then learn to measure the success of an artist, not by what they take, but by what they give. 

The true potential of mankind is not held by those who confound us with sleight of hand, and who abuse the art form and the artist for personal gain. But it is the silent akratic indifference of good people who allow the stagnation of humanity to go unchallenged. As human beings, it is in our nature to have an opinion; it is not in our nature to do nothing.

Book - origins and Theoretical model

After creating the seventh in a series of extraordinary paintings, his insatiable curiosity prompted him to investigate the deeper reasons behind each of the series. Garcia took a year-long break from painting, to reflect on his life and contemplate his works. In his reflection, he saw the experiences that led him to envision each series, the processes that allowed him to create them, and the personal evolution he derived from them. He began to sketch his thoughts and write his ideas...and then, he saw it all, on a grand and unpredictably universal scale. In his deep exploration, Garcia uncovered a remarkable scientific interpretation of the creative process that can be applied to every aspect of life.

7 Layer Era is the collection of my past seven series compiled into one study.  Each series is an independent study through color, shape, depth, and movement in my unique impasto style process of thick layering and thin staining.  This exploration of process lead me to construct a model I call Humanity's Sustainable Infinite.  In my model each series represents a "layer", these layers make up the mechanics from two states of existence; reality (physical state of existence) and subconscious ( cognitive state of existence). The works become an abstracted blueprint that has been documented in my recently published book, One Ton Goldfish: In Search of the Tangible DreamIn this book, I give a detailed account of how my works evolved into the understanding for Humanity's Sustainable Infinite by re-experiencing the process that lead me to each series.

Layer 7 - 2013
Focal Point Series

Layer 7 is equated with the subconscious. The subconscious is opposite Layer 1 (reality) and is the cognitive state of existence. Perceived reality as emotionally triggered energy becomes the process of manifesting thought into projected reality.

“I immediately started with understudies, to get my feeling for the work ready for the canvas. This was quick -- there was no new learning curve to conquer or explore this time around. I engaged in the same process as Imagination Series, breaking down the four elements of color, shape, depth, and movement -- but instead of creating ‘sporadic consistency’ across the canvas, I created ‘controlled consistency.’ Everything -- the shape, the color, the movement of textures, the demanding depth -- moved in the same direction. The emotion wrapped up and flowed in harmony, the nature of its existence the same as Imagination Series, but controlled in an effortless calm, like the focus of fire flowing into shape, simply from your will to make it so.”

Layer 6 - 2012
Reflection Series

Layer 6 is equated the conscious and unconscious point of awareness between reality and subconscious, likened to the surface tension between air and water. on one side a tangible existence, on the other an intangible existence.

“I knew right away that my focus was on the color. So the paintings themselves would be entirely covered with only one color -- one that would capture emotion by its bold presence, but still let me focus on certain aspects of technical approaches. I figured that having a large amount of one color could only stimulate the cones (photoreceptors) in my eyes further, leaving little room for distractions -- silhouetted shapes, for instance. This would compel viewers to reach for something more, to understand what they were looking at. Being forced to do so would trigger different parts of the brain. My ultimate goal here was to allow people to feel the energy, yet reach a logical understanding.”

Layer 5 - 2011
Essence Series

Layer 5 is equated to the psychological studies in Neuro-Linguistic Programming, specifically internal filters, and how these internal factors affect our perception. 

“I decided to build a series from a truly selfish perspective, completely opposite from Imagination Series, and one I would find very hard to face...When I gradually started to paint, I knew what I wanted to achieve. I first pulled from the things I remembered, things that moved me. I was determined to bring deliberate reasoning to the foreground. I kept the stained silhouettes intact on the canvas, but this time I pulled in the horizon lines from Creation Series, giving the silhouetted memories a place to rest. Bound by time and the distance of a journey, not only mine, but that of any viewer.”

Layer 4 - 2010
Imagination Series

Layer 4 is equated to the psychological studies in Neuro-Linguistic Programming, specifically external filters, and how these external factors affect our perception. 

“I started sketching in charcoal, random nothings, to allow my brain to be elsewhere. I gazed at the paper, looking past it. It began simply, the idea rooted in what I had learned from processes thus far...I stripped out the landscape from Creation Series, leaving nowhere one could settle on the familiarities of a specific time. No journey, no past, present or future...A memory is like a stain, and it would exist as one on canvas. I broke it down to the basic parts of vision found in the basic aspects of art. Depth, movement, shape and color. This would represent a memory.”

LAYER 3 - 2009

Layer 3 is equated to the parvocellular break down of the visual sense impression. 

“I was looking for something. Like digging into an old chest, I wouldn’t know what it was until I saw it. Painting my way through. Staining the canvas. Losing my surroundings. Curiosity drove me deeper. Feeling through each choice; stains became darker. I went deeper still. Time and food became irrelevant.”

LAYER 2 - 2008

Layer 2 is equated to the magnocellular break down of the visual sense impression.

“My idea was to incorporate the abstract world I was familiar with, and merge it with architectural structures in a seamless fashion, depicting the two worlds meeting and interpreting each other...I decided the structures would have to remain predominantly untouched, captured on the canvas without rendition or alteration...I found my rhythm in bridging the two worlds of structure and texture...pulling one in and out of the two worlds through the most primal purpose of lines, while keeping the respect for each standing independently.”

LAYER 1 - 2007

Layer 1 is equated to reality, representation of dreams reconstructed onto a plain of spatial orientation (perceived and projected reality into 3-dimensional space).

“The soft undertones of sporadic color spread over the length of the canvas, then masked with layers of textures hushed across, like aging walls. I tore up my abstract charcoal dreams drawn on sketchpads, now carefully broken apart and collaged in minimal fashion, allowing the background to breathe. The severed black and white dreams began to form fresh lines that flowed into newly-acquired spaces in between, feeding a sense of connectivity.”
